About Us

Our History

In mid 1973 staff at the Challinor Centre began rolling strikes. In September 1973, staff went on strike for 19 days due to the appointment of a female charge nurse. Volunteers went in to help the clients and had been helping during all the rolling strikes.

Parents of those being cared for were also allowed to help, whereas previously they had to notify the Centre beforehand and meet their family members in the ‘Meeting Lounge’.

At a meeting in November 1973, it was decided there was a need for a support organisation for the people living in Challinor who either had no family or had family who could not get to see them.

In February 1974, the inaugural meeting was held and was attended by the general community including parents, church people and parliamentarians. Hence, the birth of ‘Friends of Challinor Aid League’ (F.O.C.A.L.)

For over 30 years, Focal has supported people with a disability in various ways. For example, Focal fought for the pension entitlements to be paid to Challinor clients. A large percentage of these clients were of entitlement age but were not receiving a pension.

Also in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s when some clients were permitted to go and live privately in the community, they ere not allowed to sign and accommodation contracts. In response, Focal had taken leases with rental authorities and then rent the houses back to the clients.

Today. Focal is a provider of community support for people with a disability, a very successful Vacation Care Programme, and a number of life skill activities. We offer a range of services that we hope helps our clients live an active and fulfilling life.
